The SMB-02 has been definitely approved by all of them as the perfect studio monitors!!!
I spent 10 days in Paris at the end of June/early July. I took some time to work on the phonon PR. Already France’s top DJs and producers Laurent Garnier, Dimitri from Paris and Dj Deep have been supporting phonon and using our SMB-02 monitoring headphone and our PHONON LIQUID for their studio. I went to visit first the new Motorbass studio in Pigalle of the very talented legendary French top producer and sound engineer Philippe Zdar with more than 20 years of experience.
I met first Philippe in 91 when he was mixing a lot of French hip hop (Mc Solaar, Jimmy jay) at the Plus XXX studio and when he was starting to release with his partner in crime Boom Bass some crazy spaced-funk electronic beats under La Funk Mob on the legendary Mo’wax label from London. Philippe is a very important personality who has truly shaped the new French music scene over the years. He then went to start in the early 90s the now cult mysterious underground unit Motorbass with fellow producer Etienne de Crecy, and then he teamed up again with Boom Bass as the dance unit Cassius making a major debut on Virgin records, releasing commercial hits and remixing Daft Punk and Air.
In 2010, Philippe produced the Best Alternative Album Grammy award winning album “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” by the French indie rock band Phoenix, and since then from his new Motorbass recording studio Philippe has been the most in demand busiest producer & sound engineer on the planet, having produced lately the last albums of the Beastie Boys and the Raptures. Just before going on summer holidays, I managed to catch Philippe at his studio who has been very curious about our phonon products to make him try our SMB-02 headphones.
Philippe listened very seriously, comparing with his usual pair of headphones, and he made a big smile saying how much he liked them, how much he found the sound of the SMB-02 to be very honest and detailed! He said he would use also the LIQUID during one of his next recording session.
最初に訪れたのはPigalle地区にスタジオを新しく作り直した、20年以上のキャリアを持つフランスの伝説的実力派プロデューサ&サウンド・エンジニアPhilippe Zdarの”MotorBassスタジオ”。Philippeと最初に出会ったのは91年、”PlusXXXスタジオ”でフランスの初期HIPHOP (Mc Solaar, Jimmy Jay等)のミックスやロンドンの伝説レーベル” Mo’Wax”からフランス人アーティストとして始めて海外で話題になったパートナーBoom BassとのユニットLa Funk Mobの頃でした。 Philippeはここ20年フランスの新しい音楽シーンを築いて来た重要人物です。90年代前半にフランスのシーンが世界中で大ブレイクした際、Etienne de Crecyとアンダーグランド・ユニットMotorBassを設立そして、その後Boom Bassとダンス・ユニットCassiusをVirgin Recordsからメジャー・デビューさせコマーシャル・ヒットを飛ばしDaft Punk, Air等リミックスも手掛けました。 最近では、豪華に改装されたMotorbass recording studioで世界のトップ・アーティストのプロデュースに大活躍中です。 特に2010年にはBest Alternative Album部門でGrammyを受賞したフランスのインディー・ロック・バンドPhoenixのアルバム” Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix ”をプロデュース。最近ではThe Beastie Boys, The Raptures等の最新アルバムのプロデュース&ミックスも手掛けていて、今では世界中からオファーが殺到しているトップ・プロデューサ&エンジニアです。 前からPHONONに興味を持ってくれていたPhilippeはSMB-02といつも使っているヘッドフォンとを比較して、大きな笑顔と共に一発でSMB-02の立体的で細かい音を気に入ってくれ、「 LIQUIDも早速次のレコーディング・セッションの時に是非使用したい」と言ってくれました。
Walking west of Pigalle going around the hill of Montmartre, I go visit next Pedro Winder, the Paris DJ, trend setter and label owner of the very popular Ed Bangers record label at the Ed Bangers office in the African neighborhood Chateau d’Eau.
Pedro had already heard of phonon, he likes the classy design of the SMB-02, he listened on them excited from his laptop the last Justice track Philippe Zdar recorded last night, and says very enthusiastically how powerful and straight the sound is, how great the SMB-02 are amazing! 
続いてPigalleを西に歩き、Montmartreの丘をぐるっと回ったChateau d’Eauに位置する”Ed banger レーベル”のオフィスを訪問。世界中から注目を集めるEd bangerのレーベル・オーナーでDJ&トレンドセッターであるPedro Winterとは、15年以上の友人でもあり、元々DAFT PUNKのマネージメントを行っていた事でも有名。PHONONのことは既に知ってくれていて、SMB-02のデザインをとても気に入ってくれました。 Philippe Zdarが前日にミックスした”Justice”の新曲をラップトップとSMB-02で試聴して、「SMB-02はアメージングだね。なんてパワフルでストレートな音だろう！」とその音に熱中した様子でした。
Next to the famous Pere-Lachaise cemetery, I go visit another Paris legend in the underground independent dance music, the veteran DJ/producer Gilb’r owner of the very good Versatile records label at his studio in the basement of the Versatile office. In his studio full of analog gears, Gilb’r connects the SMB-02 to his mixer and puts them on and listens confortably in deep concentration to new materials from the french indie band The Zombies produced by Joakim and from I-cube. After listening to a couple of songs, Gilb’r is totally raving about the SMB-02, saying how confortable the listening experience is,how the high definition of space and music is, how detailed is the sound, how wide is the stereo image, and he says he wants to get a pair very soon!
そしてフランスの文化や歴史に名を残した人々の墓があることで世界で有名なパリ最大のle Pere Lachaise墓地の側にある、パリのアンダーグランド・インディペンデント音楽シーンを代表する名門レーベル”Versatile”を経営しているヴェテランDJ&プロデューサGilb’rとレーベルのオフィス地下のスタジオでのセッション。 来年リリース予定のパリのバンド”The Zombies”のニュー・アルバムや”I-Cube”の新作をアナログ機材が多いスタジオのメインのミキサーにSMB-02繋げて試聴。 Gilb’rは集中して5曲を試聴した後に、SMB-02の聴きやすさ、空間の表現力、立体的な音、幅広いステレオ感に魅了され、「早速1個買いたい」と言ってくれました!
I had the chance to visit also the top movie sound engineer in France, Ken Yasumoto, working in the studio at the french top movie director Luc Besson’s productions studio in the 8th district. Ken’smain recent works have been mixing the movies of Gaspard Noe “Enter The Void”, Luc Besson “The Lady”, Oliver Stone “Alexander” and Christophe Gans “Silent Hill”. Ken tried the SMB-02 listening to some vocals he had just recorded, and he liked very much the non colourful very honest sound of the SMB-02 which is for him very important for his job. He is using a pair of the SMB-02 now on the latest Luc Besson movie he is working on.
最後にLuc Bessonのプロダクションズ本部もあるパリ8区へ。 フランス映画界のトップ監督であるLuc Besson、Gaspard Noe等からも絶大な信頼を獲得し、映画のミックスを専門としているトップ・サウンド・エンジニアKen Yasumotoが作業中のスタジオを訪問し、SMB-02を試聴してもらいました。 最近ミックスを手掛けたKen Yasumotoの代表作は、Gaspard Noe「Enter The Void」、Luc Besson「The Lady」、Oliver Stone「Alexander」、Christophe Gans「Silent Hill」。 作業中にマイクで録音した声をSMB-02で試聴して、「色が付いていないとても正直な音が鳴る」とSMB-02を高く評価してくれ、とても喜んでくれました! 現在制作中のLuc Bessonの最新映画にも早速SMB-02を使用中です。
